China's Postal Code Format

China uses a “邮政编码” (postal code) system, which is a six-digit numeric format, like 999999, with no letters or separators. This format is similar to US ZIP codes in that both are numeric, but differs as China’s postal codes have six digits compared to the five digits of standard US ZIP codes, and they do not feature the ZIP+4 extension. According to the GeoPostcodes world postal code database, China has 40,690 postal codes covering 59,683 regions and 1,008,545 towns.
  • Postal Code Format: 999999

    • Six-digit numeric format (no letters)
    • No separators; sometimes first four digits used as defaults (ending with “00”)
    • Hierarchical use: first 2 digits = main region; 3rd = postal region; 4th = county/city; last 2 = delivery area
    • 142,608 postal codes covering 2,338 regions and 119,002 towns

    Regional Examples:

    • 100000 - Beijing (Municipality)
    • 200000 - Shanghai (Municipality)
    • 510000 - Guangzhou, Guangdong
    • 610000 - Chengdu, Sichuan
  • Structure of Postal Codes

    • Format: 6-digit numeric (e.g., 100000). No letters or separators.
    • Hierarchical levels: 1–2 digits = main region; 3rd = postal region; 4th = county/city; last two = delivery area for that city.
    • Key challenges: Postal areas don’t always align with administrative divisions; some locations use default 4-digit roots (ending “00”) instead of specific codes.
  • Management & Authority

    • Primary postal authority: China Post.
    • Update frequency: Uncertain; administrative divisions change more frequently than postal codes.
  • Addressing Standards

    • Common address format: Recipient → building → street → postal code → locality/county. Online it’s often one string from province down to street/number.
    • Administrative divisions used: Provinces & autonomous regions, municipalities, prefecture-level cities, county-level divisions.
    • Transliteration: Pinyin variations can affect search and validation.
  • Special Characteristics

    • Default/postal-root codes (first 4 digits with “00”) are used in some cases; mapped to “default regions”.
    • Frequent name/status changes in divisions reduce stability; postal codes aren’t always updated in sync.
    • Geolocation accuracy is limited due to national geospatial data security policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Beijing has many postal codes (邮政编码). Examples of postal codes for central Beijing include 100000 and 100001.

There is no town with ZIP code 12345 in China. Chinese postal codes (邮政编码) are six digits, so “12345” is not a valid Chinese postal code.

China does not use the term “ZIP code” (a US term). It uses postal codes (邮政编码), six-digit numbers in the format 999999, assigned to postal areas across the country for addressing and mail delivery.

Yes. China uses postal codes called 邮政编码 consisting of six digits (format 999999), used nationwide to route mail and identify locations.

Yes. China uses a postal code system called 邮政编码 rather than “ZIP codes”; the codes are six digits long (format 999999) and are assigned by China Post to provinces, cities, counties and delivery areas.

For other countries, we always refer to the ISO-2 code in the answer, but here we refer to the calling code. Is this on purpose?

On mail, list the recipient’s name, building, street, postal code, locality and county in that order. On websites, you’ll sometimes see addresses written as a single line, starting with the largest region and then narrowing down to the locality, street and building number.

Yes. Chinese addresses normally include a 6-digit postal code (邮政编码) in the format 999999. It is used for mail sorting and should accompany the province/city/district and street address.
